Built for a coin check
A custom bottle opener is a challenge coin with a bottle opener built into it. Customers often have us drill a small hole so it goes on a key ring and comes out of a pocket easily. Some people use a loop of para-cord or leather instead.
You see a custom bottle opener on so many challenge coins because of the coin check. Someone slams a coin down on the bar or the table, then everyone else has to produce theirs or buy the next round for the people who did. If everyone has a coin, the challenger buys the round. Rules vary from unit to unit. These checks happen at the bar and the mess hall, so a coin that opens the bottle fits right in. Members keep one on them for the next check. Internal Bottle Openers
Internal custom bottle openers have a hole and tooth cut in the middle of the coin. Coins need to be at least 2" to fit this bottle opener style. This style of bottle opener can typically be used from either side of the challenge coin and is what we recommend if our customer plans on using the bottle opener frequently.
Because there is a fully contained cut-out in internal custom bottle openers and a profiled tooth to catch the bottle cap, we have to make an additional set of tooling to punch out and hold this shape for grinding. Typically this adds 2-4 molds and jigs to the process, but we charge a flat setup and per coin fee for this setup to simplify the process - $50.00 for the tooling setup and $0.15 per coin.
External Bottle Openers
External bottle openers are incorporated into the design of the outer edge of the coin. We can use the same mold that cuts out the external shape of the coin and don't have to make more tooling or add grinding to the manufacturing process. This means we can offer external bottle openers for no extra cost. That said, external custom bottle openers don't typically hold up to frequent use as well as internal bottle openers do. They do allow for much more subtle incorporation and design flexibility though.

Companies hand custom bottle openers to customers, who open bottles with the business name on the opener. Contractors do the same thing, so the opener still gets used on a job after the invoice is paid.

At a VFW post or a Legion hall, coin checks still start at the bar. Members bring a custom bottle opener so they have a coin for the check and a way to open bottles.

When a unit orders for a deployment, the place and the year go on the custom bottle opener. After everyone is home, they reach for that opener at every coin check the group holds.

We offer gold, silver and copper platings standard with our orders. We also offer upgraded antique finishes that give an aged look to your coins. Antique finishes help greatly when your design is mostly metal (die struck) as the darker recessed areas provide a greater contrast for text and fine lines. We also offer some specialty colored metals that have a similar appearance to powder-coating (no charge), black nickel (a shiny gunmetal appearance), and now an iridescent rainbow plating (price on request).
The minimum order is 50 coins, but we always recommend ordering 100 due to the quantity discount at this quantity. Typically ordering 100 coins is only ~20% more expensive than ordering 50.
Our coins are made from brass metal if they are round. If the coins are a special shape or feature a high-relief 3D design, the material is a zinc alloy. We can also make coins out of copper, iron, and aluminum depending on your needs.
We keep your coin’s mold for a period of 3 years. If you reorder in that 3 year period, the 3 year storage period starts over!
We have multiple options for production location depending on your design choice and budget. We have manufacturing here in Florida and also overseas. Please consult with one of our sale professionals about what will work best for your challenge coin order.
You do not pay for a mold fee again on a reorder as long as the previous mold is still on file (kept for 3 years from the latest order date).
