What are Custom Bottle Opener Challenge Coins?
Challenge coin bottle openers can be similar in appearance to standard challenge coins. The main difference is that a select area is cut away to make room for the bottle opener. The integration of this bottle opener varies from challenge coins with large internal bottle openers intended for heavy use to hidden bottle openers that are incorporated into the external shape of the design. Whether the bottle opener function is the main purpose of the coin or just a neat extra feature will dictate the design and the base metal selected for production. Some metals allow us to make more elaborate coins with high-relief 3D and detailed custom shapes but the same metals also don't hold up to wear and tear from bottles as well.
Our customers appreciate the portability and ease-of-use of challenge coin bottle openers. We've had many customers tell us that it's part of their EDC (Every Day Carry). To this end, many request a small hole drilled through the coin so they can attach it to a key ring or thread a loop of para-cord or leather through it, which makes it easy to fish out of a pocket.
Internal Bottle Opener Challenge Coins have a hole and tooth cut in the middle of the challenge coin. Coins need to be at least 2" to fit this bottle opener style. This style of bottle opener can typically be used from either side of the challenge coin and is what we recommend if our customer plans on using the bottle opener frequently.
Because there is a fully contained cut-out in the internal bottle opener challenge coins and a profiled tooth to catch the bottle cap, we have to make an additional set of tooling to punch out and hold this shape for grinding. Typically this adds 2-4 molds and jigs to the process, but we charge a flat setup and per coin fee for this setup to simplify the process - $50.00 for the tooling setup and $0.15 per coin.
External Bottle Openers
External bottle openers are incorporated into the design of the outer edge of the coin. We can use the same mold that cuts out the external shape of the coin and don't have to make more tooling or add grinding to the manufacturing process. This means we can offer external bottle openers for no extra cost. That said, external bottle opener challenge coins don't typically hold up to frequent use as well as internal bottle openers do. They do allow for much more subtle incorporation and design flexibility though.
