National Police Week is an annual event held in May to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers. It is an occasion to recognize the men and women who put their life on the line to better serve their communities.

Honoring Peace Officers with Challenge Coins: A Tradition Rooted in History

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the country converge in Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor police and their families.

The tradition of challenge coins is theorized to have begun with a World War I rescue mission where those who had fallen in battle were recognized by coins representing their platoons. However, with little to no documentation or evidence, this story is more folklore and legend than historical fact.

In the 1990s, it was said that the challenge coin tradition began in Vietnam when an Army infantry-run bar tried to keep non-infantrymen away. The "proof" of combat experience started with enemy bullets but later evolved to a coin-sized item with an emblem of their unit. This tradition, now known as a coin check, continues today and has since been adopted by police, firefighters, and other first responders.

Recognizing the Value of Police Challenge Coins: A Symbol of Unity and Honor

Police challenge coins signify the camaraderie, brotherhood, and pride that comes with serving in law enforcement. It is a tangible representation of the values and principles that drive law enforcement officers to serve and protect, and a testament to their unwavering dedication to the job.

They also signify a sense of belonging to a particular unit or department, creating a bond between officers and their families. Police challenge coins are a cherished possession, and they hold a special meaning for those who have earned them through dedication and sacrifice.

Police challenge coins are a great way to show appreciation and gratitude to law enforcement officers. Challenge coins can be presented as awards at police ceremonies, given as gifts to officers who have gone above and beyond, or even sold as souvenirs to raise money for other related causes. Whether it's a small token of gratitude or a memento of a special event, police challenge coins provide an enduring reminder of the courage and service of our police officers.

Police challenge coins are a great way of recognizing the service, dedication, and hard work of law enforcement officials. While police coins are not as common as military challenge coins, hundreds of law enforcement organizations have come to All About Challenge Coins to help design a coin to properly represent their unit.

When designing a police challenge coin there are many different ways to personalize and make it represent your department properly. Most police challenge coins include things like the color blue, the thin blue line, police equipment such as handcuffs, police badges, and the Archangel Michael. Paw prints may also be added to coins for K9 units. To add a bit more personalization to your coin, you could add your city name, precinct number, landmarks from the community, or any inside jokes within your unit.
