More than 175 first responders have received challenge coins from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) since 2018, and it’s all part of a special challenge coin recognition program designed by the school.

The gold coins, stamped with the MUSC logo and first responder badges, are awarded to individuals in the Tri-County area of South Carolina for the care and safe transportation they provide for children in dire need. Most recently, seven first responders received awards for their efforts in two serious vehicle related incidents where several young patients needed to be transferred to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. In total, 19 first responders have received awards this year for their efforts, and MUSC has no plan on stopping there.

Caring for pediatric patients is not as common as caring for adult patients; it requires exceptional care, and even special certifications. MUSC’s recognition program highlights providers with certifications such as Pediatric Ready EMS that equip first responders with the tools and knowledge needed to care for children in emergency situations. The MUSC is not alone when it comes to creating custom challenge coins honoring first responders. Over the years, more and more organizations have partnered with All About Challenge Coins to design unique gifts that highlight special partnerships, memorialize specific achievements, and honor individuals for their dedication to excellence.

In this case, the MUSC wanted something special to offer the men and women caring for young children in dire need. While it might be part of a first responder's every day job to transport young patients to the hospital, it doesn’t mean their efforts are any less worthy of recognition.
